Highland Group: U.S. Extended-Stay Hotels Down In October

Posted by 9 hours ago (https://www.asianhospitality.com/highland-group-slight-decline-in-u-s-extended-stay-hotels-performance-in-october/)

Description: MOST RECOVERY INDICES of U.S. extended-stay hotels declined slightly in October compared to the month before, according to hotel investment advisors Highland Group. Economy extended-stay hotels continue to lead the RevPAR recovery during the month with a 20 percent gain over the same period two years ago. The mid-price segment has more than recovered RevPAR every month since July and upscale extended-stay hotels continue to lag mainly due to the relatively high concentration of rooms in urban locations, according to “U.S. Extended-stay Hotels Bulletin: October 2021” report from to The Highland Group. According to the report, the 4 percent increase in extended-stay room supply in October was the lowest monthly gain in 2021. Mid-price and upscale supply growth should be well below pre-pandemic levels in the near future as the impact to supply growth from reopening hotels closed during the pandemic is almost over, the report added.

Hotels should get ready for the return of corporate travel

Posted by 26 days ago (https://www.asianhospitality.com/hotels-should-get-ready-for-the-return-of-corporate-travel/)

Description: While we don’t know what will happen next, the past several months has shown us that the need to get out and travel is stronger than ever. However, as the labor and staffing crisis continues, some hoteliers struggle to accommodate the uptick in travel. Corporate travel and industry events and the need to meet face-to-face will continue to grow, so now is the time to focus on getting staff ready to welcome back corporate travelers who haven’t traveled in 18 months. Taking notes from the entertainment industry One interesting tactic that the hospitality industry should take note of is the way the entertainment industry has handled the return of movies in theaters. If you went to the movies over the summer, you may have seen how the industry pulled together to thank movie-goers for coming back to the theater. Galaxy Theaters CEO came onto the big screen to thank the audience and welcome them back. Regal did something similar.

AHLA:5L Hotel Jobs Lost To Pandemic Remain Unfilled This Yr

Description: NEARLY 500,000 HOTEL operations jobs lost during the pandemic will not returning to the industry before the end of the year, according to a report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association. In response, AHLA has launched the “Hotels are Hiring” ad campaign with the goal of filling more than 100,000 jobs in the industry. A surge in leisure travel has led to improved conditions for most U.S. hotels, but AHLA’s economic analysis found the recovery is far from bringing the industry back to pre-pandemic levels. Report: Economy,Mid-Price Extended-Stay Hotels Lead Recovery

Posted by 28 days ago (https://www.asianhospitality.com/report-economy-and-mid-price-extended-stay-hotels-lead-recovery-in-september/)

Description: MOST ECONOMY AND MID-PRICE extended-stay hotels’ performance in September was down compared to August, according to a report from hotel investment advisors The Highland Group. However, the bottom-up recovery and room supply distribution geographically are hindering the upscale segment’s recovery. Relative to other classes of hotels, mid-price extended-stay hotels recorded the largest gain in September, the U.S. Extended-Stay Hotels Bulletin: September 2021 report said. Occupancy, ADR and RevPAR indices for upscale extended-stay hotels were about the same in September as in August but the decline in absolute ADR resulted in the segment’s revenue recovery falling below 95 percent.

Description: THERE WAS A sharp drop in U.S. hotel performance in the last week of October as anticipated ahead of Halloween, according to STR. However, the comparable Halloween week in 2019 saw a relatively worse performance. ADR for the last week of the month was $127.70, down from $134.14 the week before and up 1.5 percent for the same period in 2019. RevPAR decreased to $75.28 from $85.74 the week before. AHLA: Hotels In Some Markets In ‘Depression Cycle’

Posted by 6 days ago (https://www.asianhospitality.com/ahla-hotels-in-some-markets-still-in-depression-cycle/)

Description: THE RECOVERY MAY be under way, but most of the top U.S. markets, 21 out of 25, remain at a recession or depression level, according to a report from the American Hotel & Lodging Association. Urban markets are in worst shape, with most still in a “depression cycle.” The overall U.S. hotel industry remains in a “recession,” according to AHLA’s report citing STR data. The difficulty for urban markets is that they depend substantially on business from events and group meetings. Room revenue was down 52 percent in May compared to May 2019. New York City, for example, is still in a depression with nearly 200 hotels in the city closed due to the pandemic, taking with them 42,030 rooms, one-third of the city’s supplies.

Survey: Business Travelers Will Hit The Road With Purpose

Posted by 15 days ago (https://www.asianhospitality.com/survey-business-travelers-will-hit-the-road-with-purpose-eventually/)

Description: WHILE BUSINESS TRAVEL may be less frequent in the immediate future, it will make a comeback in time, according to a report from Hilton. After nearly two years of isolations, businesses will have a lot of making up to do once they hit the road. Post-pandemic business travel is likely to be more strategic and purposeful overall as travelers have missed building in-person professional relationships during the pandemic, according to a recent survey by Hilton and Morning Brew of more than 7,000 respondents. Though some have returned to traveling for work, 87 percent of respondents have said that they miss hopping from city to city to pursue their work.

USTA: Promoting Brand USA To International Visitors Critical

Posted by 15 days ago (https://www.asianhospitality.com/usta-promoting-brand-usa-to-international-visitors-critical/)

Description: AS THE U.S. is set to open its borders to vaccinated individuals, promoting the U.S. brand to international visitors is more critical than ever, according to the U.S. Travel Association. Also, the planned reopening of the Canadian and Mexican borders is being praised as “a big win” by hotel associations. The steep declines in international travel have resulted in more than $250 billion in lost export income since the start of the pandemic, said Tori Emerson Barnes, USTA’s executive vice president of public affairs and policy. This situation has decimated funding for the Brand USA program, a public-private partnership formed to promote travel to the U.S.

Delta Variant Forces CBRE To Revise Its Economic Forecast

Posted by 25 days ago (https://www.asianhospitality.com/delta-variant-forces-cbre-to-revise-its-economic-forecast/)

Description: THE LONG-AWAITED RETURN of business travel may be delayed as a result of the Delta variant of COVID-19, according to CBRE Hotels Research. As a result, the firm has revised its forecast for the year’s fourth and final quarter. CBRE’s new forecast will extend into 2022 under the expectation that corporate travel budgets will remain constrained until that time. The firm said the momentum the industry developed over the summer due to a surge in leisure travel has been handicapped by Delta’s impact on business travel, leading to a “second-derivative” market condition in which the recovery continues but at a slowing pace.

Description: GROUP TRAVEL CAME to the rescue for U.S. hotels during the second week of September, bringing occupancy up to a 4-week high, according to STR. Occupancy reached 63 percent during the week ending Sept. 18, up from 60 percent the week before but down 11.6 percent from the comparable time period in 2019. ADR was $131.04, up from $130.82 weekly and down 2.6 percent from two years before. RevPAR rose to $82.50 on a weekly basis from $78.46 but dropped 13.9 percent from 2019 levels. “The gain in occupancy was helped by weekly group demand eclipsing 1 million for the first time since the earliest days of the pandemic,” STR said. “More group demand created a lowering effect on ADR, as group rooms for upper-tier classes are typically priced lower than transient rooms.”

Hoteliers cheer plans to end travel restrictions for vaccinated passengers

Posted by 15 days ago (https://www.asianhospitality.com/hoteliers-cheer-plans-to-end-travel-restrictions-to-u-s-for-vaccinated-passengers/)

Description: THE U.S. ON Monday announced it will lift COVID travel bans on all air passengers in November if they are fully vaccinated and undergo testing and contact tracing. Hotel and travel associations welcomed the decision to lift the bans, implemented to prevent the spread of COVID-19 but which now pose a threat to the hospitality industry’s recovery. The unprecedented restrictions had kept relatives, friends and business travelers around the world separated for many months as the pandemic grinds on. In July, President Joe Biden said discussions were under way on lifting the restrictions for vaccinated people, at least between the U.S. and Europe.

Brands likely to take a hard look at housekeeping

Posted by 17 days ago (https://www.asianhospitality.com/hotstats-brands-likely-to-take-a-hard-look-at-housekeeping/)

Description: THERE HAS BEEN mixed response to the trend of making housekeeping an on-request deliverable rather than a standard service, according to HotStats. The hotel industry might take a cue from top brands to decide on this in the future. Housekeeping labor on a per-available-room basis remains down across the globe, but it is showing some signs of a resurgence as demand is back, HotStats said in a blog post. The suspension of daily housekeeping was a strategy to limit guests and staff against exposure to COVID-19, but it was deemed a money saver imiting housekeeper hours. Hilton was the first one to introduce it, later most brands followed. Now, many hotels are doing away with daily cleanings. Some brands such as Omni Hotels & Resorts, are still offering full cleanings by request. Omni, like most other hotels, are also presenting the option of partial cleanings, which entail a refresh of towels and trash removal, the blog post added.

Lab-grown protein set to transform pet food - Business & Industry | News | Analysis | Magazines- Asian Trader

Posted by 20 days ago (https://www.asiantrader.biz/lab-grown-protein-looks-to-transform-pet-food/)

Description: Cloudy liquid bubbling in glass tubes is key to a US startup’s hopes of remaking the pet food industry by growing nutritional meals in a lab. Most pet food includes animal protein, which requires the slaughter of animals and is ultimately a source of planet-warming gases. Rich Kelleman’s Colorado-based Bond Pet Foods, however, is aiming to sidestep both pitfalls by making those same proteins in a biotech process. His inspiration comes in part from his own disgust over the treatment of livestock on its way to the food supply.

Motherwell retailer hits first £1 million of home delivery sales

Posted by 22 days ago (https://www.asiantrader.biz/motherwell-retailer-hits-first-1-million-of-home-delivery-sales/)

Description: A Scottish retailer has crossed £1 million of home delivery sales with Snappy Shopper. Adeil Hussain, who runs the One Stop store in Airbles, Motherwell hit the milestone this week, in just under 20 months after he started the service in February 2020. He introduced the service when the Covid-19 pandemic was closing in, but as a new concept, things didn’t take off immediately and he was fulfilling just a couple of deliveries a day. However, when the first lockdown happened, things really changed pace and he has never looked back. The infrastructure with Snappy Shopper was in place and a couple of orders per day turned into 15. This figure increased each week, to 55 deliveries a day and could run anywhere up to 100 a day.
